The Sacramento Police Department arrested 27-year-old Jaspreet Hayer on Friday, June 22 for felony possession of stolen property and violation of parole. Police say arrest would not have occurred were it not for a tenacious burglary victim, an alert musician store clerk, and follow-up by the Sacramento Police Department’s North Area Crime Suppression Unit (CSU).
On Wednesday, June 6th, 2012, Chris Amato, a local musician and business owner, was the victim of a residential burglary. Taken in the burglary was a unique “Marching Snare Drum” that Mr. Amato regularly plays as a member of the City of Sacramento Pipe Band, which consists of approximately 30 members.
The stolen drum is extremely unique and valued at approximately $1,000.
Mr. Amato reported the theft to the police and then started his own investigation, contacting numerous local music stores and inquiring if anyone had attempted to sell the unique instrument. Upon contacting the Guitar Center at Arden Fair, he learned someone had attempted to sell the drum and that the store clerk had retained the contact information of the individual.
Mr. Amato re-contacted the Sacramento Police Department and a plan to identify the suspect and retrieve the stolen instrument was initiated.
The investigation led to the arrest of Jaspreet Hayer, who was found to be in possession of the snare drum.
Mr. Amato arrived at the scene and positively identified his property.
