City looks to shut down Northgate sports bar

After receiving more than 400 police calls over the past five years, the City of Sacramento filed a nuisance complaint to close the American Spirit Sports Bar on Northgate Boulevard.

The City’s complaint against the bar alleges assaults, batteries, robberies, drinking and drunkenness in public, drugs, gunfire in the night, street gang activity, and murder (notably the Sept 2004 death of Jamauz Antwan Jones in the parking lot)

Bar co-owner and former Grant High School Principal Larry Brown sees the problem as a parking lot affair, saying it’s up to the police – “not the business” – to take care of what goes on outside the bar.
