Sacramento Police release statement regarding an “in custody death”

Rumors are flying that Tyrone Smith has died while in custody. Below is a statement from the Sacramento Police Department regarding an “in custody death”:

Police Investigate In Custody Death

The Sacramento Police Department is investigating the death of a suspect while in custody.

At Saturday, October 22, 2011, officers arrested a suspect for felony charges. At approximately 11:33 p.m., while transporting the suspect, officers noticed he was unresponsive and stopped at Franklin Boulevard and Fruitridge Road. Officers administered CPR and requested medical assistance. The Sacramento Fire Department responded and transported the suspect to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

The preliminary investigation shows no indication that the suspect’s death was the result of police actions. Limited information is being released at this time, pending notification by the Coroner’s Office of next of kin.

The Sacramento Police Department’s Homicide, Internal Affairs, Professional Standards, and Crime Scene Investigations Units are working on this investigation in conjunction with the City’s Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
