Sacramento DA looking into whether Canterbury Inn shooting was self-defense

The Sacramento DA is looking into whether this morning’s shooting at the Canterbury Inn was self defense.

According to Sacramento Police, officers responded to the 1900 block of Canterbury Road at approximately 12:50 a.m. on a disturbance occurring at a hotel.

Officers arrived finding a broken window in a hotel room and 29-year-old Christopher Maurice Johnston of Sacramento who had been shot and killed. The subject who shot the Johnston was detained at the scene.

Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene. Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe Johnston had gotten intoxicated and into a fight with a friend. A neighboring hotel resident came out, broke up the fight, and then headed back to his room.

A short time later, detectives believe Johnston came down to the room where the neighbor who intervened was staying, broke out a window, and went inside. Johnston was shot when he entered the neighbor’s hotel room.
