Ten years ago today, Officer William “Bill” Bean, Jr. lost his life in the line of duty.
On February 9, 1999, the 29-year-old Officer Bean and his partner were on patrol when they initiated a traffic stop at Rio Linda Boulevard and Grand Avenue. When the officers asked the suspect for his identification, the suspect fled. Officer Bean and his partner pursued the suspect until the suspect’s car became disabled in the area of Knightlinger St and South Ave. When officers stopped, Officer Bean exited his vehicle and approached the suspect’s. The suspect immediately opened fire, striking Officer Bean.
Officer Bean was rushed to the hospital where he later died of his wounds. The suspect was found and arrested. In 2003, the suspect was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. A memorial for Officer Bean now sits in place in front of the Kinney Station.
Thank you Officer Bean for all of your bravery and sacrifice that night to keep North Sacramento safe. We will always remember you.
