Officer involved shooting in Willis Acres

An officer involved shooting occurred late Friday night at an apartment complex in Willis Acres in North Sacramento.

On Friday, August 2, 2013 at 11:30 p.m., a team of Gang Enforcement Officers attempted to speak with a large group of subjects who were in the area of 23 Arcade Blvd near Johnston Park. As the officers approached on foot several of the subjects fled. Two of the officers pursued one subject that was carrying what appeared to be a short barreled shotgun.

The officers gave verbal commands to the subject to stop however he continued on foot with the shotgun.

One officer, fearing for his safety and the safety of the public fired his handgun at the subject striking him one time in the lower leg.  After being shot, the suspect continued to flee but was captured a short distance from the shooting.

Medical attention was immediately summoned for the injured suspect and he was transported to an area hospital. The suspect’s injuries appear to be non-life threatening.

After the scene was stabilized and the suspect transported to the hospital, the remaining Gang Enforcement Officers as well as responding Patrol Officers searched the area where the initial contact took place as well as the area where several of the other subjects fled. During this search officers located several handguns and one assault weapon that were discarded by the other fleeing subjects.

The identity of the arrested suspect is being withheld at this time pending further investigation.

The Sacramento Police Department’s Homicide, Internal Affairs and Crime Scene Investigations Units are conducting this investigation in conjunction with the City’s Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
