Day of Reflection and Remembrance
Cal Expo’s 9/11 Memorial Open on September 11th

SACRAMENTO- Cal Expo is home to one of the most poignant sites in the world commemorating the events of September 11, 2001. On Saturday, September 11, 2010, Cal Expo’s 9/11 Memorial Plaza will be open to the public for viewing and reflection, free of charge, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The California State Fair Memorial Plaza Fund was established in 2002 with the purpose of educating the public and helping them to understand the events of 9/11. The fund supported the development of a permanent outdoor exhibit commemorating the tragedy of Flight 93, and the attacks against the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. The Memorial Plaza located at Cal Expo was officially rededicated on August 19, 2008 after completion of the final memorials for the Pentagon and Pennsylvania tragedies.

The California Exposition and State Fair’s Memorial Plaza features a steel I-beam, a 125,000-pound piece of wreckage from “Ground Zero” at New York City’s World Trade Center and a 5,180-pound granite sphere and fountain facet. The granite sphere is inscribed with the names of all 3,071 victims, and is suspended upon a fountain of water allowing the ball to be touched and rotated by hand to view its entire surface. In 2003, a 50-foot-tall Carillon Bell Tower with 23 “Singing Bells” was added to the Plaza display where it soothes and entertains visitors with a number of inspirational tunes.

The California Exposition and State Fair donated the space at the fairgrounds to be the permanent home of the Memorial Plaza. The Plaza is located near the Main Gate of the fairgrounds and next to Expo Center Building 2.
