Man sues Wal-Mart after termination for using medical marijuana

Heads up California.

Medical marijuana is legal in Michigan, but that doesn’t mean Wal-Mart’s cool with it.

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against Wal-Mart for the termination of Joseph Casias, a Michigan employee whose doctor verified his illness qualified for medical marijuana use, after failing an on-the-job injury-related drug test in November 2009.

Casias, who suffers from a rare form of cancer in his nasal cavity and brain, relies on his doctor’s medical marijuana prescription to alleviate the daily pain.

Wal-Mart officials say they are sympathetic to Casias’ condition, but the company needed to put the safety of its customers and associates first, and look to provide the “safest environment for our associates and customers”.

There’s no doubt in my mind Wal-Mart wants to provide a safe and healthy environment. We wouldn’t want an environment that looks like this, right:

Good call Wal-Mart; allowing medical marijuana may bring about a lot of unwanted problems.
